The Forest Management Plan (FMP) under the MegLIFE project promotes scientific, community-driven management of Meghalaya’s forests, balancing livelihood needs with conservation.

Supported by trained Village Community Facilitators, it provides a roadmap for sustainable use, restoration, and long-term protection of forest resources.

The Meghalaya State Bamboo Mission is an implementing body under Meghalaya Basin Management Agency for National Bamboo Mission, aimed at promoting bamboo cultivation across 10,000 hectares, generating up to 1 million tonnes of harvestable bamboo annually, and creating a sustainable bamboo-based economy through value addition and livelihood generation.

Despite receiving high rainfall, Meghalaya faces seasonal water scarcity, with over 54% of springs in decline. MegLIFE is rejuvenating 1,800+ springs through scientific mapping and implementing 500 Springshed Treatment Plans across 500 villages to strengthen water security, groundwater recharge, and sustainable springshed management.

Through Income-Generating Activities (IGA), the project enhances livelihood opportunities and supports income growth in rural communities. IVCS and SHGs play a key role in enabling access to finance and market linkages, ensuring sustainability over time.

Entry Point Activities (EPA) are introduced to build trust by addressing immediate needs identified by communities, often through essential infrastructure. Supported jointly by the project and communities, these interventions strengthen shared spaces and encourage collective action

Meghalaya’s heavy rainfall leads to significant soil erosion and nutrient loss, particularly on vulnerable hill slopes, impacting agricultural productivity and livelihoods. To address this, the project promotes Sloping Agricultural Land Technology (SALT) to restore soil fertility and improve crop yields.

MegLIFE aims to restore 22,500 hectares of degraded forests across Meghalaya through plantation activities that combine traditional knowledge, scientific approaches, and native species. This initiative will enhance biodiversity, conserve soil and water resources, and support local livelihoods.

Community nurseries managed by Self-Help Groups and Village Project Implementation Committees provide quality native saplings for MegLIFE's restoration efforts. They strengthen local livelihoods, foster community ownership, and support long-term forest conservation.

MegLIFE’s Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) initiatives restore fragile forest and agro-ecosystems through soil stabilization, groundwater recharge, and improved water availability. These efforts strengthen ecological resilience, enhance farm productivity, and support sustainable livelihoods.
